Transition to primary school
Starting school is a big step for children and their families. To smoothly transition your child to Werrington County Public School we have 4 transition sessions designed to make the journey into "big school" exciting and enjoyable.
Session 1 ~ Teddy Bear's Picnic
Our first session is a Teddy Bear’s Picnic with the current kindergarten students. Our newly enrolled Kindergarten students and parents are invited to attend, have some morning tea and play some picnic games. All students are invited to bring a teddy bear along to join the fun!
Session 2 ~ Classroom Visit (English Focus)
Our newly enrolled Kindergarten students will spend some time in the kindergarten classrooms, exploring a story and completing some craft linked to the book that has been read. Parents are invited to stay at school and participate in an information session about English and how parents can support their children in English skills and concepts being taught.
Session 3 ~ Classroom Visit (Mathematics Focus)
Our newly enrolled kindergarten students will spend some time in the kindergarten classrooms, exploring shapes and numbers and using concrete materials to explore mathematical ideas. Parents are invited to stay at school and participate in an information session about mathematics and how parents can support their children's learning.
Session 4 ~ Library Visit and Sport Participation
Our newly enrolled kindergarten students will get a chance to visit our Library and meet Mrs Baxter our school Librarian. They will also get a chance to explore our playground and participate in some sports games and activities. Parents are invited to stay and participate in a general information session, covering a range of administrative and curriculum facts.

What to expect in Kindergarten
Learning and development
Kindergarten follows the NSW curriculum. Children build early skills in literacy, numeracy, creative arts, health and physical activity, science and technology. Learning through play also supports social, emotional and academic growth.
Daily routines
Children learn routines such as morning arrival, snack and lunch breaks, lining up, using bubblers and moving safely around the school. Teachers guide children as they settle in, but practising at home helps.
Best Start Assessment
At the start of the year, all Kindergarten children take part in the Best Start Assessment. This is a friendly, one-on-one activity where teachers learn about your child’s literacy and numeracy skills. It is not a test and needs no preparation.
